The third annual Canadian Baseball History Conference will be held the weekend of November 3rd and 4th in London, Ontario, home of venerable Labatt Park. Join us for a day and a half of research presentations and panel discussion covering a wide range of topics relating to baseball’s historical development in Canada, and for a walking tour of the ballpark, the world’s oldest.
Saturday November 3, 2018 8:00AM – 4:30PM
Sunday November 4, 2018 8:00AM – 12:15PM
Middlesex County Courthouse, 399 Ridout Street North, London. This is a special venue. The three-storey parged brick building sits on a slope overlooking the Forks of the Thames River in the heart of the downtown. Constructed between 1827 and 1829, it was reputedly modeled after Gothic-styled Malahide Castle, just north of Dublin, Ireland, the ancestral home of Colonel Thomas Talbot, whom the British had appointed overseer of the London region’s settlement. Our oak-panelled conference room features a bank of windows looking directly across the river to Labatt Park. In fact, in several early images of baseball at the park (then Tecumseh Park), the courthouse can be seen clearly. Below the conference room sit the jail cells that once held several men accused of killing the Black Donnellys of Lucan in 1880. Conference activities include a tour of the premises led by London historian Dan Brock.
